Ever since he shocked the world and signed on to fight in the UFC, the sports world has wondered when former WWE star CM Punk would make his mixed martial arts debut. On Thursday, Punk (whose real name is Phil Brooks) told UFC.com that he was hoping to make his debut for the promotion in December.
The 36-year-old Punk has been training in Milwaukee at Roufusport Academy since December. Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and Ben Askren are among the big names also training there under Duke Roufus.
Punk said, “I say this all the time: I’d love to fight tomorrow. But I want to be as prepared as I possibly can be and I will be. I’m still shooting for December. It might be January. I’m not sure, but I’ll be ready to fight.”
Punk has no MMA or combat fighting experience to speak of, so many dismiss his foray into the UFC as a publicity stunt. He will likely fight in the welterweight division and has a lot to prove to his legions of doubters.
The UFC currently has one pay-per-view slated for December. UFC 194 will take place on December 5, and it appears that is what Punk is aiming for.
